New's that actually affects real people, Netflix is splitting

Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, just announced that he is planning to split Netflix in half. He will form a new company called "Quickster" which will handle all of the DVD by mail service so that Netflix can handle all of the online streaming. His hopes are that this will force his costumers to choose between the two (and more precisely, he's hoping they choose online streaming). Online streaming is the future of movie watching, and if Hastings wants to be successful, he'll have to operate his company accordingly. Personally, I hope that Netflix grows because I'd like to see more movies available on instant play. I'm bumming off my parents account, so I can only watch online (the DVD's get sent to their house in California). I'll be pretty upset however, if my parents switch over to Quickster and leave me with only YouTube for entertainment. Maybe I'll have to get off my rear and get my own account some day.

  1. Wow, that's interesting to hear about netflix splitting. A lot of people will be affected by that. I also agree that the future of movie watching is in online streaming.

  2. A lot of people were upset that they'd have to pay for both services, but for me and Trev, we practically never used the mail service and just streamed (there's still plenty enough selection to survive off of), so this just means a price reduction for us!

Until Netflix takes over the world and realizes that it can charge whatever they want and I'd still need their streaming service. They just have to hook you young. Like cigarette companies.

  3. So my roommate said something interesting. He said that if he had to pick, he'd chose the mail service, not because he prefers mail, but because there's a wider selection. I definitely get where he's coming from. So when netflix splits, they should definitely try to up the number of instant play movies so that people don't switch the wrong way.

  4. Agreed. If Netflix wants to be successful, it's going to have to make it so newer titles are available faster, because right now the selection is awful.

  5. Another plus with quickster is it is offering games (xbox360, ps3,wii) as well as movies. That could possibly prove to be what separates them from other media-mail services

  6. The contract Netflix has with Starz is up soon and will not be renewed. In my opinion the newest and best movies on Netflix are the ones they have from Starz. http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/01/technology/netflix_starz/index.htm

  7. Netflix is popular only because it is a great value and very convenient and they have always catered to their customers wants.

Once the Netflix split was carried out it seems like they went from an extraordinary company to a lousy company overnight. They lost the vision of what made their company great in the first place.
